Photonics Spectra Magazine Honors Actuality Systems With Photonics 2003 Circle of Excellence Award

Feb. 4, 2004 - Publication Recognizes Perspecta Spatial 3D System as Among the Most Technically Innovative New Products of 2003

BURLINGTON, Mass. - Feb. 4, 2004 - Actuality Systems, Inc., the world leader in spatial 3D visualization technology, announced today that it has received a 2003 Photonics Circle of Excellence award for its Perspecta TM Spatial 3D System, from Photonics Spectra magazine. Perspecta is a revolutionary visualization system that uses a spatial display to create full 360-degree spatial images that give users the ability to create, observe and manipulate objects as they exist in nature.

The Actuality Systems Perspecta 3D System was chosen by a panel of industry experts as one of 25 "Most Technically Innovative Products of 2003." According to the editors of Photonics Spectra, the awards, which are being presented for the 16th year, recognize "the enterprising companies and individuals who have refused to accept the status quo and have pushed the limits of technology to develop new photonic products and processes."

"We are honored to be recognized by the leading publication in the photonics industry for the work our engineering team has done in spatial 3D technology," said Cameron Lewis, CEO of Actuality Systems. "We feel that Perspecta is extending the possibilities of what can be done with spatial 3D and this award helps to validate our approach. We look forward to even greater progress in 2004."

Spatial 3D refers to full-dimensional, interactive imagery that occupies a volume of space, much like a hologram. Its application in medicine includes surgical planning, interventional imaging such as aligning a surgeon?s scalpel or treatment device with a real-time 3D scan, image-guided tumor ablation, breast biopsy, radiation therapy planning, catheter visualization, and numerous other procedures. Other industry applications include air-traffic control, visualization and creation of 3D gaming; and for security, providing a faster, more reliable way to visualize the contents of freight or passenger luggage.

The award was announced in the January 2004 issue of Photonics Spectra and was presented during ceremonies at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, Calif., during Photonics West. Additional information on the recipients and awards will be available at www.photonics.com .
