"Holographic" Approach to Radiation Oncology Yields Significantly Improved Cancer Treatment Plans

Actuality Systems, Inc.'s PerspectaRAD System Nears End of Third Successful Multi-Institution Study

Bedford, Mass. - April 20, 2007 - Actuality Systems, Inc., a leader in computer assisted 3-D medical visualization and guidance, today announced success in clinical studies of their PerspectaRAD cancer treatment planning solution. PerspectaRAD combines Actuality’s hologram-like 360-degree 3-D visualization technology to improve the effectiveness and accuracy of existing radiation therapy treatment products, such as Philips Medical Systems’s Pinnacle.  Clinical and development partners include:  Philips Medical Systems, Rush University Medical Center, Rhode Island Hospital, and New England Medical Center (NEMC).

Radiation treatment of cancer can result in radiation exposure to otherwise healthy tissue. PerspectaRAD augments existing radiation therapy planning systems to enable clinicians to plan for maximum radiation to the tumor while, at the same time, preventing excessive radiation exposure to healthy tissue – an improvement that is expected to increase the effectiveness of the cancer destruction while reducing the potential side effects related to healthy tissue exposure.  The current clinical trial is the third, the results of which are anticipated to be announced at major radiation oncology conferences worldwide.  Previous trials showed significant advantage in dose estimation and treatment error detection than when performed without PerspectaRAD.

The previous two studies revealed the power of 3-D visualization, even in earlier versions of PerspectaRAD. For example, as reported in a previous study, Actuality’s 3-D technologies used in conjunction with Philips Pinnacle resulted in more accurate volume coverage estimation than Pinnacle alone 47% of the time.  J. Chu et al, “3D Display of Treatment Planning and Anatomy Data: Initial Observation Using a Promising Technical Advance,” World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, IFMBE Proc. 14 1729-1732 (2006).

“All of the clinical efficacy studies show PerspectaRAD improves key aspects of radiation treatment of cancer,” explained Michael Goldstein, Actuality President and CEO.  “In view of these promising results, we believe PerspectaRAD is a must-have product in every hospital’s arsenal of cancer treatment.”

About Actuality Systems

Actuality develops computer-assisted medical procedure planning and guidance products that reduce treatment-related costs through the application of proprietary 3-D visualization, preoperative planning, and intraoperative guidance and decision support.  Actuality's initial products in the area of radiation oncology and soft tissue surgical planning reduce hospital and payer costs by increasing surgical accuracy and reducing time in the operating room, reducing patient impact, and reducing repeat procedures or secondary therapy. Actuality's products focus on therapy for: breast, liver, abdominal, cardiac, vascular, prostate, and urinary cancers. The company's flagship product, PerspectaRAD, is a spatial 3-D system that displays images that occupy a volume in space, giving users a 360-degree view and simultaneous multi-view collaboration - without goggles. For commercial applications, Actuality's technology is designed for applications in drug discovery, engineering, geosciences, consumer entertainment, aerospace and defense contractors.
