Actuality Systems Announces Installations of Perspecta Spatial 3D System at Two Major Universities in Japan

May 19, 2003 - Kyoto University and Okayama University Purchase Perspecta for Advanced Computer Imaging and Earth Sciences Research

BURLINGTON, Mass. - May 19, 2003 - Actuality Systems, Inc., the world leader in spatial 3D visualization technology, announced the installation of its Perspecta TM Spatial 3D System at two of Japan's most prestigious research centers - Kyoto University and Okayama University.

These two orders represent the first installations of Actuality's Perspecta Spatial 3D System in a Pacific Rim nation. At Kyoto, the system's unique volume-filling rendering will be used in the university's Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies as part of the center's research and development work in advanced computer imaging and visualization of 3D motion-captured images.

At Okayama, Perspecta is being used at the school's world-renowned Institute for the Study of the Earth's Interior. Work at the institute covers a wide range of advanced earth sciences including geophysics, geochemistry, tectonics, and fields related to volcanology, in addition to extensive study of the earth's evolutionary history as a planet. Scientists will use Perspecta to aid in analyzing geological and seismographic data using 3D animations.

"We are extremely pleased that these acclaimed universities have chosen the Perspecta Spatial 3D System for visualization of complex environments," said Cameron Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of Actuality Systems. "With the advanced work being done in 3D visualization and virtual reality, we expect Japan to become an important market for Perspecta as well as an important source of application development."

"Perspecta holds the enormous potential of being the first new GUI in over a generation. This, combined with the competitively unique visualization properties of spatial 3D, gives our customers ample incentive to push the envelope on image comprehension," Lewis continued. "The potential of the Perspecta Spatial 3D System is underscored by our customer geography: Japan, Europe, Canada, and the United States."

The Perspecta 3D System combines a 360-degree Perspecta Display with powerful Perspecta Platform Software, with OpenGL compatibility, the firm's proprietary Spatial Rendering Kernel and the Perspecta Software Developer Kit. The system enables users to render high-resolution spatial images that can be viewed from any angle as the user moves around the display. The display itself illuminates a record 100 million volume pixels, or "voxels," using Actuality's patented technology, within a 60 cm transparent dome.

Typical applications for the Perspecta Spatial 3D System include: interventional medical image analysis (such as biopsy or catheter localization), surgical planning, and the fusion, registration and visualization of CT, MRI, 3D ultrasound, and PET scans; Battlespace visualization, air-traffic control; 3D game development; and homeland security (visualizing the contents of freight or passenger luggage).

About Actuality Systems
Actuality Systems, Inc. develops, produces, sells, and licenses the Perspecta TM 3D System and patents for the combination of hardware and software that permits 360-degree visualization, simulation, and collaboration. The system enables users to create high-resolution spatial 3D images that can be viewed from any angle around the 360-degree dome- without the use of special goggles. The company was funded in 2000 in Cambridge and now operates from offices near Boston.
