Actuality Systems to Discuss 3D Visualization at Upcoming
Medical Innovation Conference
BURLINGTON, Mass. - October 22, 2002 - Gregg Favalora, founder
and chief technology officer of Actuality Systems, will make a
presentation on the company's Perspecta 3D visualization system
and discuss advances in 3D medical imaging at the Investment in
Innovation Conference being held October 24-25 at the Sheraton
Hotel in Boston.
The conference, hosted by Medtech Insight, will spotlight 50
early-stage companies that are involved in the medical technology
field. Actuality Systems, a pioneer in the development of spatial
3D visualization technology, provides its unique Perspecta display
to help physicians and medical researchers visualize images within
a full 360-degree volume. For example, Perspecta can be used by
doctors working to understand the exact location of a tumor on
a CAT scan or mammogram, or by surgeons for precise positioning
before surgery or radiation treatment.
The Perspecta platform consists of a dome-like spatial display
and the associated software and SDK. The platform enables users
to render high-resolution spatial images that can be viewed from
any angle as the user moves around the display. The system illuminates
more than 100 million volume pixels, or "voxels," throughout
a full range of 3D locations within its Lexan dome. This is unlike
3D displays that require special goggles to simulate multi-dimensional
imagery, or flat-screen monitors that render 3D data into flat
2D images.
In addition to its use in medical imaging, other applications
for the Perspecta platform include: drug discovery, where it can
be used to visualize protein structures; air-traffic control;
game development; and security to quickly "see" the
contents of freight or passenger luggage.
The Actuality Systems presentation is scheduled for 11.45am on
Friday, October 25. More information on the conference is available
at http://www.medtechinsight.com/in3-06.html.
